HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in
unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building
experiences. HOBY also provides adults with opportunities to make a
significant impact on the lives of youth by volunteering.
The
2010 HOBY Seminar was held at Mt. St. Mary's University in Emmittsburg,
MD May 29-31.
180
High School Sophomores attended the leadership seminar--GJOC President Barbara Crain chaired a table at the Career Luncheon
on Friday; Dennis & Ann Lane judged
essays on Saturday; Carol Applegate, MD
HOBY President, was involved at the Seminar all weekend; and MDSD
District Governor, Mickey Price from
Phoenix, MD was there on Sunday morning to judge candidates to represent
MD at the World Leadership Conference in LA in July. Twenty-three
Optimist Clubs in our District, including GJOC, donated $9,000 to
support students attendance at the seminar. Working with HOBY is
an excellent example of Optimists working to "Bring Out the Best in
Kids!"
